Note to Parents

A Note To Parents about the Internet

We are happy to be able to provide your child access to the Internet. There are many wonderful educational and fun sites on the World Wide Web, as well as many resources to help children with their schoolwork. However, there are also some sites that contain materials that you may not want your child to see. As your child learns to use the Internet, your guidance and supervision is very important.

We have made extensive efforts to ensure that your child’s use of the Internet is a positive experience. Our staff has created a Kid’s Page that contains information about our children’s programs, suggestions for safety on the Web, and links to search engines and sites appropriate for children. Our librarians are happy to work with parents, children, and school groups to make using the Web an exciting and educational experience.

The Library uses a Web management program called A8E6 that blocks access to some materials. However, because of the ever-changing content of the Web, with many thousands of new sites created daily, no software can be totally effective in screening out material that you may find inappropriate for your child. Also, there are legal and regulatory limits to the restrictions public libraries can impose on Internet access. The Library cannot assume responsibility for the content of any Internet site other than our own.

Library policies are based on the idea that it is every parent’s right to determine what is or is not appropriate for their child. You can guide and teach your child in a way that no one else can. We urge you to work with your child to make using the Internet as useful, rewarding, and safe as possible.

If you would like to discuss this or any other library matter, please call Library Director Diane Greenwald at 739-5440 ext. 223.
